Here is a quick summary about Cross Stitching:

Cross Stitching by definiton are two stitches crossing each other (X-shape stitches) that form a two-dimensional picture. The most popular form is the counted cross stitching. Every pattern is uniformed in size and appereance since you go in only one direction upon the fabric.

Cross stitching is time consuming, requires an extreme amount of patience, and attentiveness to detail. There is no pattern printed and you must rely on a pattern to help create your picture. You are literally counting stitches of different colors to form the piece.
There is also stamped cross stitching (simple in my opinion) which actually has the pattern printed onto the fabric and is accented with X-shape stitches.
A machine is unable to do cross stitching versus some of the other needleworks. Its actually hard to reproduce, since its done by hand it takes a long time to complete and usually one pattern is made. The only way to reproduce the piece is to actually redo the pattern all over again.
